As we can see, today’s male physical examination patient appears quite tense right from the start of his check-up.
I don’t know whether the patient’s tension is the direct cause (e.g. ‘sphincter clenching’!) but the doctor has to try a number of positions for the patient before a rectal examination is able to be successfully (and relatively comfortably) performed.
